West Lunga National Park, declared a national park in 1972 covers an area of 1684 square kilometers in Mwinulung District of the north western province. West Lunga National Park is bordered by the two major rivers namely the west Lunga to the west and the Kabompo to the east and south. Among the large mammals found are elephant, bushpig, warthog, blue and yellow backed duikers, Zebra, hartebeest, oribi, puku, eland, Impala, waterbuck, baboon, vervet monkey, klipspringer and sitatunga. Blue monkeys and hippos are sighted along the two major rivers. Bird life is very varied and includes the red throated crested guinea fowl.
